MNÁ TÍ and Irish colleges across West Donegal are unanimous in their view that they are ‘not in favour of water charges of any kind’.
This was the decision made at what was described as a very ‘calm and concentrated’ public meeting held at Ionad Naomh Padraig, Dobhar on Wednesday night.
The meeting was organised to discuss the implications pending water charges will have on mná tí in West Donegal.
Organiser, Mr Aodh Mac Ruairí gave a presentation where he compiled what he described as ‘very reserved’ figures of what costs mná tí will be facing next year.
The well-known manager of Aislann Rann na Feirste said people at the meeting where shocked at the figures they were reading.
“We went into the meeting with the intention of discussing possibilities and avenues available to us to avoid paying extra money during the summer months.
“But it quickly transpired that all ten colleges were unanimous in their view that they are not in favour of water charges of any kind. It was also agreed that people representing all Irish colleges and mná tí will march at the Right2Water protest in Letterkenny on Saturday.”
A small delegation was selected to meet with the Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs, Joe McHugh TD, tonight to discuss what possibilities there are for this major issue for the Gaeltacht.
