Donegal hurlers start slow as Kildare win well

Kildare 3-21 Donegal 1-15

Donegal will have left Newbridge with many questions after a lacklustre opening 35 minutes that saw them trail by 15 at the break.

The long trip south to Cedral St Conleths Park failed to produce the same performance as they displayed in last weekends victory over Kerry. It was the home side who kept their promotion hopes alive with a convincing 12 point win but Donegal were a different side after the break as they outscored the home side by six points.

The meeting of last years Ring and Rackard Cup winners and the fact they were both tied on four points meant there was plenty at stake for both sides. Donegal seemed to freeze in that opening half and left themselves with a mountain to climb at the break.

Kildare had respected what Donegal had threatened to bring to the table and they were out of the blocks with an unbelievable tempo before they raced into an early 2-3 to no score lead after only seven minutes.

Ronan McDermott’s fine finish on 44 was just reward for the Donegal possession.

For Donegal it was a case of what might have been but they have the ability and their place in Division 2 is fully justified.
