Donegal hotel’s name has DJs in a spin

by Louise Doyle

THE pronunciation of a popular Donegal hotel had two DJs in such a spin they called the hotel live on air.

Downtown Radio, based in county Down, is presented by Gary Myles and Glen Pavis every Monday to Friday.

During last Thursday morning’s programme, Gary told listeners that he had been to Burt, saying how much his enjoyed he visit. He also spoke of the beautiful architecture of St Aengus’ Church.

But confusion arose between the pair when Gary mentioned An Grianan Hotel, leading them to differ over its pronunciation.

Determined to get to the bottom of the pronunciation puzzlement, the pair phoned the hotel live on air to listen to how the receptionist pronounced the facility’s name when they answered the phone call.

They introduced themselves to receptionist Siobhán and when they asked her if she had ever heard of Downtown Radio, the duo were delighted when she said she had. They were also happy when she settled the uncertainty around the pronunciation of the hotel’s name.

The conversation turned to the hotel’s renowned Sunday carvery.

Siobhán advised that the popular Sunday carvery has been on a hiatus since the Covid-19 pandemic but that it was set to return in September time.

The news was music to the duo’s ears and they ended the call by telling the receptionist that they planned to visit the hotel for its famed Sunday carvery in the next month or two.
