Donegal hold off Monaghan to reach Ulster semi-final

Donegal 0-23 Monaghan 0-21

Donegal made hard work but eventually prevailed in the Ulster quarter-final against a battling Monaghan in St Tiernach’s Park, Clones.

Donegal stormed ahead in the opening stages and established an 0-10 to 0-4 lead, with Michael Murphy kicking a two point free and Peadar Mogan (0-3) and Dáire Ó Baoill (0-2) adding to that.

Ciaran Thompson kicked a two pointer and added two more Jim McGuinness’ side led by 0-14 to 0-8 at the break.

But Monaghan hit back to make it a one point game in the second half and while Donegal got ahead by five again, the Farney men brought it back to two points as Dessie Ward kicked a two pointer with 90 seconds to go.

He tried his luck again a minute later outside the arc but it fell just wide as Donegal held on.
