Derry 0-16 Donegal 4-11
A goal hungry Donegal defied the odds to beat back-to-back Ulster Champions Derry in Jim McGuinness’ first championship game back at Celtic Park.
Derry started strong but with Odhran Lynch coming out of goals for kick outs, Ryan McHugh found Daire Ó Baoill and the forward lobbed the ball over the Derry number one for a first goal.
Donegal went into the break 1-7 to 0-9 ahead thanks to a brace of points from Oisin Gallen and Ryan McHugh, while Ó Baoill, Peadar Mogan and Ciaran Moore added one each.
Gaoth Dobhair man Ó Baoill hit a similar goal in the second half as Donegal won the kick out and looped the ball over Lynch who got a touch but couldn’t keep the ball out.
Oisin Gallen converted a penalty for the third goal and Donegal got their fourth with less than ten minutes to go as Jamie Brennan got possession after substitute Gavin Mulreany’s kick out, and the Realt Na Meara man raced forward and fired into the net past the Derry defenders.
Donegal will play Tyrone or Cavan in the semi-final next week.
