DONEGAL Garden Trail, made up of 22 public and private gardens around the county, will feature on RTE’s Nationwide programme tomorrow night.

The co-ordinators of the trail are Joan Donleavy and Dorothy Jervis and the idea for the trail was first muted after a public meeting in Raphoe in 2006. The television show will focus on gardens in East Donegal, mainly in Raphoe and Stranorlar.

Speaking to the Donegal News today Joan said she was very excited to see the programme which was filmed last summer. The aim of the trail is to promote gardening as a leisure activity and to open up private gardens to the public that otherwise wouldn’t be seen.

Although Joan is unsure of what gardens have made it to the final take of the programme she said it is likely that it will feature Oakfield Park, Ros Bán Garden in Raphoe and Dunmore Garden in Carrigans.

Joan said: “We have gardens spread all over the county from Inishowen all the way down to Portnoo. We have some partner hotels connected to the gardens who offer accommodation to visitors coming to Donegal.

“We also have 12 partner garden centres and nurseries so if someone wants to buy plants while they are here they can look at our brochure or our website to see where is the nearest location.
The gardens range from huge gardens like Glenveagh to smaller ones like Oakfield. The trail has grown in strength to strength over the years.”

The trail was started by Ann Kavanagh and her late husband Bob and the doors first opened in 2007 for visitors. Joan is a member of the Donegal Garden Society, a separate entity, but members have gardens along the trail. Joan herself has a garden at Lower Cranny in Inver.

The programme will air tomorrow at 7pm on RTE One.
