Donegal gardai working alongside PSNI for G8 Summit

An Garda Siochana

GARDAI are working with their colleagues in the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) to address any policing or security issues that may arise prior to or during this month’s G8 Summit in Fermanagh.

“As with any high profile event attended by world leaders, there is a heightened threat/risk, however An Garda Síochána will have appropriate resources in place to ensure the security and well-being of the delegates and the community of the North West Region,” a garda spokesperson said.

At the present time there are no plans in place in respect of road closures or diversions in this jurisdiction.

However, people residing in or transiting through areas of South Donegal, Leitrim, Cavan and Monaghan should be aware of the possibility of vehicle security checks on roads leading to the event site, to expect delays and to adjust their travel arrangements accordingly.

Assistant Commissioner Kieran Kenny said meeting the needs of the local community, as well as farming and business communities has been a key consideration in planning for this security operation.

“Every effort will be made to minimise any disruption to the local community in carrying out their day-to-day business and activities in the border region.
“We will work closely other agencies and with everyone involved and seek the support of the community in co-operating with Gardai and stewards during the event.”

Assistant Commissioner Kenny added that, while everyone has the right to peaceful, lawful protest, gardai will act appropriately to ensure that there is no unnecessary disruption caused to the public by such protest.
