INSPECTOR Goretti Sheridan is part of a 12-strong Donegal ladies team who are travelling to Belfast this weekend to take part in the World Police and Fire Games (WPFG).
The prestigious WPFG, the third largest international multi-sport event in the world, from 1 – 10 August. will bring together 10,000 competitors from 67 countries. Competitors will compete in around 56 sports at 35 venues across Northern Ireland.
The Donegal Garda Division is sending two 7-a-side GAA teams to the games – a ladies team and a Men’s O35 team.
Ballybofey based Garda Michelle Kelly is captain of the ladies team. She is joined by Grainne McLoone, Jenna Moyna and Siobhan Gibbons (Buncrana), Siobhan Campbell, Laura Hynes and Michelle McLaughlin (Milford). Linda Healy and Corina Finn (Letterkenny), Cathy Rabbitte (Ballybofey), Denise Cassidy (Raphoe) and Goretti Sheridan (Letterkenny). Detectives James Frain and Bosco Gallagher will oversee things from the sidelines.
Termon player Kevin McGettigan, injured in the recent Championship game with Gaoth Dobhair, has gone from player to manager of the Men’s O35 team alongside Declan McPartland. The Donegal panel is made up of Adrian McGettigan and Niall Maguire (Falcarragh), Joe McManus (Milford), James Doran (Creeslough), Adrian Lyons (Lifford), Odhran McBride (Glencolmcille), Sean McDaid (Letterkenny), Ronan Steed (Bunbeg), Neil Cox (Donegal Town), Robin Doyle (Castlefin), Charlie Gallagher (Donegal Town) and John Gallagher (Buncrana).
Inter-county GAA referee Sean McLaughlin (Buncrana) has been appointed one of the tournament referees.
Sports include ice hockey, athletics, rugby, football, cycling, surfing, golf and swimming. There will also be a few more unusual sports including the Ultimate Fireman, Muster and Tug of War events.
Other Donegal based members of the force who will be in Belfast include Frank Togher (Buncrana) cycling; Alan O’Mahoney (Letterkenny) triathlon, Johnny Sweeney (Milford) Marital Arts and Paul Tierney (Ballyshannon) Boxing.
The majority of events are open to the public, giving people the opportunity to attend some fantastic free sporting events. The Games are held biennially and are commonly referred to as the ‘Olympics’ for serving and retired police, fire, prison and border security officers.
