BRÓD na Gaeltachta is a festival highlighting the LGBTQI+ community, that has a programme of bilingual events which give pride and priority to people with Gaelic roots. The festival runs from July 18 to July 23.
The first of these events to take place is “Walking and Conversation” with Sarah and Evan as they explore the gardens and ethos behind a 6 year-old off-grid Permaculture Smallholding in Dunlewey, from 12pm to 2pm, on Monday, July 18.
Also on Monday, a bilingual evening of music and poetry with the pioneer of modern gay literature, Cathal Ó Searcaigh will take place in Dámhlann an Ghleanna, from 6pm to 8pm.
Bringing Monday’s events to a close, a Zoom discussion event will take place from 8:30pm to 9:30pm around the development of the dictionary and how important it is to have the ever evolving language covered in such a comprehensive way.
On Tuesday, Na Gay Gaels by Brian Lacey will take place at the Old Barracks at 8pm. In this illustrated, bilingual talk Brian will be looking at the history of homosexuality and queerness in Ireland from the beginning of the historic period with the arrival of St Patrick and Christianity down to the end of Gaelic Ireland at the beginning of the 17th century.

On Wednesday at 8pm, Izzy Kamikaze, Brian Lacey and Seán Ó Dubhchon bring a radical, first hand perspective of some key moments in the community’s history, from the earliest marches in Dublin to the founding of Dublin Pride and later the North West Pride in Sligo.
Tapas and Traditional Music with Denise Boyle and Isabel Ní Chuireáin will take place in Caifé An tSean Bheairic at 8pm on Wednesday.
For The Love of Mary will take place in St. Ann’s Church, Killult at 8.30pm on Thursday, July 21. Viewed through the lens of a displaced woman from a Protestant/Unionist background who has spent most of her life living in Nationalist (Catholic) areas in the North of Ireland,‘For the Love of Mary’ maps a personal fascination with the Virgin Mary and her lost humanity, rediscovered in those stories shared by women living in Ireland.
Poetry with the accompaniment of a harp, will take place in St Ann’s, Killult at 8.30pm. And Susie Blue & Band will perform in The Strand Road Bar & Kitchen bringing Thursday’s events to an end, at 10:30pm.
Susie Blue is a queer indie pop artist from Derry, now based in Belfast and together with her band of merry men her live shows are electric and interactive.
On Friday, from 12pm to 2:30pm, a workshop exploring the art and craft of writing poetry, will take place with poet Annemarie Ní Churreáin.
In an encouraging and supportive environment, participants will learn to identify resonant poetry themes, gaining insights into the making of a poem.
The Festival comes to a close on Saturday, July 23, with a parade kicking off at 3pm.
