GRACE Boyle has confirmed that she will not be continuing as the Treasurer of the Donegal County Board beyond the annual Convention in December.
Ms Boyle will complete her fourth year as the County Treasurer at Convention, but will not be seeking re-election. She had vacated the post in December 2010, but was re-elected in January 2012 to the position.
The Termon clubwoman has confirmed that she will give serious consideration to allowing her name go forward to contest another position on the County Board, but didn’t confirm to which position she was looking.
A close allay of Jim McGuinness’s on the County Executive, Ms Boyle, who works for the Revenue Commissioners, has said that ‘burn out’ is the reason for her impending departure.
“It has just been so draining,” she told the Donegal News.
“I just can’t continue in a position with this workload on top of holding down a job. You really don’t get a concept of the job until you do it.”
The recent success of the Donegal senior football team has led to a vastly increased workload.
She explained: “Last year I wrote one cheque to Croke Park for €1,362,240 for All-Ireland tickets. All of that money had to be collected and processed. Last year was just unbelievable.
“At the time the GAA made the County Secretary a full-time post a few years ago, they had considered doing the same with the Treasurer’s job, but they abandoned that plan.”
She has paid tribute to her assistant in the Treasury, Frankie Doherty, and the book keeper, Eilish Rush, for their assistance as she prepares for a possible move in a top table reshuffle. Interestingly none of the officers will be compelled to leave their sentrys having completed a term at this year’s Convention.
Grace Boyle has also been a key figure in the development of the Centre of Excellence in Convoy.
She said: “Convoy is a separate issue entirely that needs work. It is so busy organising the fundraising for Convoy as well as keeping on top of the day-to-day stuff. I feel I’m not giving my time enough, but I just don’t have any more time to give it.”
