THE funeral takes place tomorrow (Monday) in Sligo of former Donegal footballer Brian Cotter, who passed away on Saturday following an illness.

A native of Killybegs, the late Mr Cotter played for Donegal in the 1950s. Listed as a member of the Dunkineely club, he featured in two Ulster Championship games for the county: Playing at wing-back in the 3-2 to 0-6 win over Down in 1957; and lining out at corner-back in a 3-11 to 3-5 defeat by Down a year later.

He is survived by his wife Peggy, sons Tony, Aidan, Willie and Ray, daughter Majella, brother Sean, sister Joan and a wide family circle.

Donegal GAA was also in mourning at the death of the legendary Gaelic Games author and journalist Owen McCann on Friday.

He was a native of Moville in County Donegal and indeed was a founder member of the Moville GAA club.

He passed away at Beaumont Hospital on Friday and was laid to rest in Fingal Cemetary on Saturday following Funeral Mass at St John Vianney Church. He had lived in Artane, Dublin for many years and was renowed for his vast treasure trove of GAA records and statistics, which he accumulated and updated with great care.

He was a regular contributor of Gaelic Games articles to magazines and match programmes.
