John Friel of of Urris GAA has been awarded the recipient of the 2025 Hall of Fame Award.

“John’s contribution to the GAA in Donegal, both at club and county level, spans more than five decades of outstanding service, commitment, and leadership.

“A founding member of Urris GAA, John has been at the heart of the club since its earliest days — as a player, manager, referee, and administrator. Over the years, he has held every major position within the club, including Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Senior and Underage Manager, and more. His energy and passion for Urris GAA have been the driving force behind the club’s continued growth and success, inspiring generations of players and volunteers alike.

“John also made his mark at county level, representing Donegal at Under 21 level as a player and later contributing profusely through many County Committee and fundraising initiatives. For over 20 years, he has served as a steward at county games and was a long-time referee, always embodying the true spirit of the GAA.

“John played a key role in securing coaching initiatives in Inishowen schools, helping to strengthen Gaelic games in an area where other sports traditionally held a stronger presence. Our recent Intermediate finals were finalists were three quarters Inishowen. The growth of Gaelic football in Inishowen over the years stands as a testament to his vision and determination and that of those like John.

“Respected and admired throughout Donegal and beyond, John Friel truly does represent everything that is great about the GAA — dedication, community spirit, and lifelong commitment.

“We at Donegal GAA are proud congratulate John Friel on the hugely deserved honour of being Hall of Fame Award recipient for 2025.”
