Donegal first for rubbish bag headache

A DONEGAL businessman has introduced a new pay-as-go household waste disposal service as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal dumping.
The portable pay-to-use waste compactor for household waste and recycling opened earlier this week at the Texaco Service Station in Ardara.
“Having a facility like this means that there’s one less excuse for people to be dumping black bags along the side of the road,” Mr Hugh Maloney, proprietor of the Texaco Service Station said.
“It may be useful for camper van visitors or holiday home guests in busy nearby areas like Nairn,” he added.
It’s the first facility of its kind in Donegal and people are encouraged to bring their bags of waste to the bin, buy a ticket in store, and then put their bags into the drum at the bin located on site.
“For €8 you will get two standard black bags of household waste into the drum and the mixed, dry recycling is €5 per ticket,” he said.
Mr Maloney said that he was unable to get anyone locally to provide the service.
“I came upon the BIGbin company when I was travelling down the country. Hopefully, they can work alongside the local refuse companies,” he said.
The bin uses the equivalent of a car park space and is fully self-contained, with no leaks or odours, with access only possible when the drum opens.
The BIGbin accepts dry, clean recycling material such as cardboard, hard plastic, paper and cans.
The company can control the bin remotely and can track usage and know when a bin is getting full.
“Once close to capacity, a truck will remove the bin and bring it to a registered facility before it is returned to the forecourt here to operate as usual,” he said.
“It’s also a great option for people who have extra bags to get rid of at busy times of the year. Hopefully, we’re the first of many outlets across Donegal to introduce such a facility,” Mr Maloney said.
