THE parents of a young Manorcunningham woman who suffered severe cerebral palsy after complications at her birth took a case against the HSE and settled for €6 million in the High Court today.
Nadine Wilken suffered severe dyskinetic quadriplegic cerebral palsy after complications with her birth at Letterkenny General Hospital in 1996. Mr Justice Kevin Cross awarded the €6 million said he hoped it would take care of her needs for the rest of her life. No liability was admitted by the HSE.
The court was told by Denis McCullough SC, for the family, that her birth had at first been progressing without concern, but her mother Judith’s condition led medics to decide a caesarian section was need at 9.40am, on June 11,1996, but this was not carried out until over an hour later with Nadine delivered at 11.28am.
They contended she had suffered deprivation of oxygen to her system during this time.
In a statement read by the family solicitors, her parents said Nadine was an ‘amazing young woman’ who needs 24 hour care and it gave them comfort to know she would receive everything she needs beyond their lifetime.
