Donegal faces ‘awful price’ in suicides

A Priest and counsellor has warned ‘an awful price will be paid’ if the government continues with harsh cutbacks in the mental health sector.

Fr James Sweeney has called for a stop to any further cutbacks and warned government and senior civil servants if they forced mental health services to ‘operate on a shoestring budget they would pay and awful price’.

Speaking to the Donegal News, Fr Sweeney, who has worked as a counsellor for over 25 years, said he was detecting a new ‘sense of hopelessness and despair’ due to the continuing economic downturn and harsh austerity measures targeting the ‘most vulnerable’.
