DONEGAL ETB has this morning confirmed that it will not now push ahead with plans for a new access control fence at Gartan Outdoor Education and Training Centre.
The Education and Training Board said the fence would have improved overall public safety within the Gartan Estate and enhanced child protection measures for children partaking in courses at the centre.
The plans however sparked anger among local people who use the facility for walking, jogging and cycling on a daily basis.
A petition opposing the idea has drawn over 800 signatures.
Confirming that it will not now go ahead with the move, an ETB spokesperson said this morning: “This decision has been made following receipt and consideration of recent correspondence regarding the access roads through the grounds. Donegal ETB believes it is prudent to clarify the current status of these roads and also take time to consider representations and observations regarding the proposed developments.”
Councillor Michael Bride said the decision would come as a huge relief to the wider public for whom Gartan is an important resource in terms of exercise and social activity.
