A Donegal driver was caught speeding at more than double the limit in Stranorlar during the October Bank Holiday weekend.
This was detected as part of an extensive Garda Roads Policing Operation that was in place from Thursday to Tuesday, to ensure road safety during the busy weekend.
Gardaí revealed that during this period, nationally there was one fatality on our roads, while seven serious collisions resulted in eight individuals sustaining serious injuries.
Over the course of the operation, An Garda Síochána conducted 820 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints.
More than 4,790 breath tests and approximately 215 oral fluid tests were carried out.
There were 153 arrests for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Additionally, more than 3,000 drivers were detected exceeding speed limits throughout the weekend. Notable speeds detected, including one Donegal driver going 127km/h in 60km/h zone on N15 at Stranorlar.
Fixed Charge Notices issued for other road offences during this period included 300 people using mobile phones, more than 140 unaccompanied learner drivers and more than 80 people travelling with no seat belts.
In addition, 87 vehicles were seized from learner permit holders driving unaccompanied and more than 345 vehicles were seized for having no tax or insurance.
“An Garda Síochána continue to appeal to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to slow down and to always choose a speed that is appropriate to the driving conditions, to wear your seatbelt and keep your eyes always on the road,” a garda spokesperson said.
