Mayo 0-11 Donegal 0-11

Donegal surrendered a five-point lead to draw with Mayo in their league opener at Markievicz Park today.

Donegal started well and led by 0-5 to 0-1 after 12 minutes with Conor O’Donnell and Michael Langan scoring points from play.

Declan Bonner’s men spurned two goal chances and they went 18 minutes without a score before Ryan McHugh and Langan raised green white flags.

Mayo were poor but Eoghan McLaughlin did land a good point late in the half.

HT: Mayo 0-3 Donegal 0-7

Donegal pushed five points after the resumption although Jason Doherty got Mayo back to within a goal with a brace from play.

Donegal were then granted a penalty when Michael Murphy was fouled by Stephen Coen, who picked up a second yellow card and a red.

Patrick McBrearty saw his spot-kick saved by Rob Hennelly although Murphy converted the resulting ’45’.

Langan added another score but then Mayo hit four on the trot, and deep into injury-time, Rob Hennelly curled over the equaliser from a free.

Donegal still got a point from the match but it felt like a defeat for Bonner’s charges. They play Kildare next week.
