Donegal doctors earned over €22m from medical cards

FAMILY doctors across Donegal earned almost €22.3 million for the care of patients under the medical card and other state schemes in 2012.

The top earning practice in Donegal is operated by Dr Anthony Delap, Bunbeg. His practice received €549,918 in fees and allowances under the medical card and general medical services schemes in 2012, according to official figures released yesterday by the Health Service Executive.
Dr Delap was one of thirty-two GP practices in Donegal who received more than €300,000 in gross payments including practice supports for operating the GMS scheme in 2012.

Dr Delap is joined in the list of the top earning doctors countrywide by Dr Paul Stewart, Falcarragh €514,649, Dr Charles J Bourke, Killybegs €474,182, Dr Maria Bradley, Buncrana €449,557, Dr Brian Lavelle, Convoy, €431,850, Dr Michael J Kennedy, Buncrana €397,571, Dr Seamus O’Domhnaill, Buncrana €390,388, Dr Emer Gavin, Carndonagh €390,046 and Dr Margaret Gilligan King, Tamney €388,375. All figures are gross amounts including practice support.

The highest earning doctors in Letterkenny were Dr Angela Gilliigan (€352,208), Dr. J.R. Mc Feely (€328,945), Dr John Coughlan (€289,306) and Dr Raghavan Paratian (€190,001) all attached to the Ark Medical Centre, Pearse Road while Dr J.P. McGeehin (€327,494), Dr Dara Scally (€313,942), Dr Brian McColgan (€248,015) and Dr James Mc Daid (€221,976) all work at Scally Medical Practice.

In total, €22,299,957 was paid to 92 doctors in Donegal under the scheme. The vast bulk of GPs operating the GMS scheme are paid annual capitation fees for each patient on their list. In addition they can receive out-of-hours payments for non-routine consultations outside of normal working hours .
Special fees are payable for a range of additional services such as excisions, suturing, vaccinations, catheterisation and family planning. Other supports which GPs can receive include study leave, and annual leave as well as payments for practice nurses and locums.
Three were also three family doctors in Donegal who received gross payments of less than €10,000 for the full year of 2012.
