GARDAÍ are questioning a dissident Republican from Donegal following the seizure of three assault rifles last night which are suspected to have been used in the murder of David Byrne at the Regency Hotel last month.
The 33-year-old was shot dead at a boxing weigh-in by an armed gang as part of a feud between two criminal gangs.
The Donegal man (39) was arrested in Slane, County Meath, yesterday afternoon and is being detained at Drogheda Garda Station.
Officers from the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) and the Special Detective Unit stopped a car travelling north along the Derry road, operating on intelligence.
Three AK 47 assault rifles were found in the back and are now being examined to establish if they were used in the Dublin murder.
The Donegal man was held after armed Gardaí from the stopped a car near Slane.
He is believed to be connected to dissident republicans. He can be held for up to three days by detectives.
The operation and arrest was the result of a massive undercover garda operation.
Gardaí are refusing to comment for “operational reasons.”
Crime reporter Conor Feehan, who is with The Herald and The Irish Independent, told Newstalk Breakfast it is believed the guns are owned by dissident Republican in Donegal.
