Donegal delegation travels to Dublin today to meet with TII

A DELEGATION from Donegal will travel to Dublin today to meet with representatives of Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

This special meeting takes place every year and provides an important opportunity to make representations to the state agency and to outline issues that need to be addressed or prioritised in the county.

The group is comprised of Donegal county councillors and officials from the local authority.

“It is our best, and generally our only opportunity to chat to them face to face,” said Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District, Cllr Michael McClafferty, who will be joining today’s delegation.

“It doesn’t matter who is leaving the county, we are all wearing the county T-shirt.”

He said that all councillors travelling to the capital, regardless of which municipal district they are representing, have one priority and that is to deliver for Donegal.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re Inishowen, Glenties or Donegal Town, we have one focus in mind and we all talk as a united voice.

“Everybody will push equally as hard for every area as their own area and we work as a collective.”

He said this can include anything from repairs on national roads to the approval of major and minor schemes, maintenance issues and road safety measures, ranging from fixing a footpath to the long-awaited TEN-T Project.

Cllr McClafferty plans to raise a number of issues, including the widening and resurfacing of the N56 and essential bridge works
in Ray on the outskirts of Falcarragh.

He said he will also use the opportunity to highlight the planning restrictions along the N56.

The independent councillor spoke of the frustration felt by councillors due to the lengthy timeline in securing funding and then completing road projects.

“Even though we push our hardest it can still take a number of years for a project to get from point A to point Z.”
