Donegal 1-13 Down 2-8
Donegal got their 2022 season off to a winning start as they edged out Down in the McKenna Cup in MacCumhaill Park this evening.
The match had an even start and the sides were level at three points apiece after 17 minutes.
Donegal then upped the ante and kicked four points on the trot with Michael Langan and Patrick McBrearty both landing a brace.
Down came back into contention following Andrew Gilmore’s goal, but a late score from Peadar Mogan left Donegal two ahead at the break.
The visitors got back to within one point of their opponents in the third quarter but then Donegal’s Tony McClenaghan drilled the ball low to the net in the 50th minute.
However, Down came back for more again scoring 1-2 without reply, with Odhran Murdock scoring the goal.
That saw Donegal fall a point behind but they hit back with scores from Ciaran Thompson, Peadar Mogan and McBrearty to win the match.
All in all, it was a good run out, and nine players made their debuts.
Donegal will be back in action next Saturday when they face Antrim in Portglenone.
