Donegal Dark Sky aims to promote astrophotography

Patryk Sadowski, Treasa Giblin and Gareth Wray three of the foremost Astro photographers in Ireland pictured at Lifford Camera Club where they imparted knowledge on the finer details of their work.

WITHIN the rolling landscapes of Co Donegal, where rugged coastlines meet its renowned hills, a celestial spectacle unfolds every night above.

Here, amidst the backdrop of dark, star-strewn skies, an initiative known as Donegal Dark Sky is on a mission to spark curiosity and ignite passion for astronomy across all age groups and communities.

Founded by Lifford lady, Treasa Giblin Frazer alongside Patryk Sadowski, Donegal Dark Sky aims to promote astrophotography and share knowledge about the wonders of the universe.

Their vision extends far beyond the realm of seasoned photographers, reaching out to National

Schools, families, and even care home residents with a love for the night sky.

For the past two years, Donegal Dark Sky has embraced the theme ‘From Garden To Stars’, advocating for inclusivity in astronomy.

This approach emphasizes that one need not venture far to experience the marvels of the cosmos; they may be observed right from the comfort of one’s own backyard.

“Our theme for the last two years is ‘From Garden To Stars’ with the result being inclusion for everyone with an astronomy interest,” Treasa explained.

“We have just completed our second year with the annual ‘Irish Astronomy Week’ 2024 founded by Ronan Newman, where we posted daily night sky events, held a National School Colouring in Competition, had a free astro talks event held in Lifford Old Courthouse on March 12 to a packed house hosted by three award winning and nationally recognised, published photographers – Gareth Wray, Patryk Sadowski and myself.”

A new addition to this year’s festivities was the inaugural online Astro Photo of the day competition.

The winning image, a majestic Milky Way capture by Colin Graham, not only showcased the talent of amateur astrophotographers but also served as a reminder of the beauty that lies beyond our atmosphere.

Tresa concluded, “We look forward to next year’s Irish Astronomy Week 2025 held from March 1 to 8 which is a celebration of astronomy and space science in Ireland with the ethos to ignite your sense of wonder and curiousity about the mysteries that lie beyond.”
