Gardai monitor the scene where Mr Kelly’s blue Vauxhall hit a tree between Porthall and Rossgier.

Councillor Crawford said, “A tragedy such as this is terrible at any time of year but it is particularly difficult to absorb when it occurs around the Christmas period.

“This young man’s death has created a sense of sadness and shock in a community where he has a wide family circle and where the families are well known.

“What has happened here has cast a shadow over this area and I have no doubt the community would join me in sending their sympathies and prayers to the whole family circle.”

His remains will be reposing at his home, 42 Beechwood Grove in Lifford, from 7.30pm this evening.
