WHEN we think of cowboys, it conjures up images of wagon trails and wide open prairies; pretty much the Wild West or, in the case of a dedicated group of cowboy enthusiasts the ‘Wild North West’, due to be featured on RTE’s Nationwide this evening.
The Donegal Western Trail Riders Association has been together for the past quarter of a century, recreating the cowboy lifestyle in Donegal’s rugged landscapes.
This ‘gang of four’, Pat Rice of Letterkenny, Ramelton pair John Duffy and Tony McCaul and John O’Donnell of Portsalon, have travelled to numerous states in America, visiting ranches and rodeos to indulge in the lifestyle, spending thousands of Euro on Old West attire and even their own covered wagon, featured in the programme.
A sight not to be missed.
Reporter Mary Harte and Brian McVeigh recently spent a day with the Riders in the stunning surroundings of Glenree, their regular meeting ground, and in the confines of Olde Glen Bar ‘saloon’.
They were joined on the day by fellow rustlers George and Jonathan O’Donnell as well as cowgirl Shannon Duffy.
In the programme, the Riders enjoy the banter with a group of – somewhat bemused – American tourists; retire for a sing song around the campfire after a hard day before riding off into the sunset in true cowboy style!
Join them on the wagon trail tonight at 7pm on RTE1.
