Donegal County Councillor walks out of meeting in protest

COUNCILLOR Micheál Choilm mac Giolla Easbaig has walked out of today’s Donegal County Council Islands Committee meeting at Dungloe Public Services Centre in protest.

Wanting to draw attention to the important issues that affect island and coastal communities, Cllr Mac Giolla Easbaig said today he felt “enough is enough”.

“At the last meeting I was told that things would move in relation to Machaire Rabhartaigh.

“I have been consistently raising this and asking for a meeting with different agencies who have an interest and that hasn’t happened.

“I was told within two weeks that it would happen from the last meeting and that hasn’t happened at all,” he said.

As part of Cllr Mac Giolla Easbaig’s protest, he also highlighted the lack of resources to carry out necessary work in the coastal and island communities.

“I’ve written to the council requesting that additional staff be provided so that more funding can be sought.

“This is funding that I have been led to believe is available if we have more staff in place.

“We have fantastic staff, but they are being undermined by not being given the necessary resources.

“More importantly, our community is being failed by Donegal County Council in relation to this.

“So on that basis, I had to take a stand today to try and bring attention to important issues that affects our island community and coastal community.

“We deserve better,” he said.
