Donegal County Councillor cleared of assault

A Donegal County Councillor accused of assaulting two men during a night out in Letterkenny has been found not guilty.

Independent Councillor John O’Donnell had earlier been cleared of punching Emmett Gallagher in the Sultan Takeaway during the early hours of February 23 2015.

Following a trial that lasted five days at Letterkenny Circuit Court, Mr O’Donnell was also found not guilty of assaulting a second man, Seamus O’Donnell.

John O’Donnell had always argued his innocence and during the trial it emerged that he had asked Gardai to try and source CCTV of the alleged assault as “the camera doesn’t lie, thank God”.
