Week takes place from October 1 to 7, with a theme that focuses on supporting mothers and their babies from the early stages of pregnancy through to their breastfeeding journey.
The HSE has published the Breastfeeding Action Plan Progress Report (2016-2023), highlighting the importance of breastfeeding in protecting babies against numerous illnesses and meeting their every need.
In Donegal, a range of supports are available to mothers and families, ensuring they have access to the resources needed to protect and promote breastfeeding.
With two dedicated HSE Lactation Specialists in the county, Kate Finnamore based at Letterkenny University Hospital and Mary McFeely working within the community, mothers can benefit from both hospital and local-level assistance.
Mary McFeely, a community-based Lactation Specialist, highlighted the importance of accessible breastfeeding education for all parents.
“True to this and on the run up to National Breastfeeding Week, I delivered a Breastfeeding Preparation Class on the 19th of September in the Family Resource Centre in Stranorlar to facilitate working mums who are keen to receive breastfeeding education,” McFeely shared.
Breastfeeding rates in Donegal are showing promise, with 50% of mothers breastfeeding upon discharge from Letterkenny University Hospital, and 31% continuing to breastfeed three months later.
To further support these efforts, a series of events have been organised for National Breastfeeding Week 2024, offering both education and community engagement.
On Tuesday, October 1, a key event will take place at the Radisson Hotel in Letterkenny, running from 10am to 3pm.
Dr. Sarah Brennan, GP and breastfeeding advocate, will provide valuable insights into breastfeeding and mindfulness, while world-renowned author and Lactation Consultant Nancy Mohbacher will join via Zoom at 2pm.
Additionally, Jan Crommie, La Leche League leader, will offer practical advice on navigating the early days of breastfeeding.
Another key event, the ‘Letterkenny Latch On,’ will take place at Café Trax in Letterkenny Shopping Centre on Monday, October 7 at 10am.
This initiative encourages mothers to breastfeed publicly, helping to normalise breastfeeding in Donegal’s communities.
The county boasts 10 breastfeeding support groups, offering mothers a safe and supportive environment.
Partners and other support people are also welcome to attend, fostering an inclusive atmosphere where mothers can raise concerns and seek advice.
First-time mother Donna, from Letterkenny, shared her gratitude for the support she received through one of these groups: “A massive thank you to Mary McFeely for all the help, guidance and support you have given me during my breastfeeding journey.
The support group on Friday mornings in the Pastoral Centre has been amazing. Without Mary and the other mums, I would have given up months ago. But having the continuous support from Mary has empowered me to continue to breastfeed my little boy. Such a great service for postnatal mums.”
