THREE brothers from Gaoth Dobhair have claimed victory in Ireland’s largest traditional currach race.
Michael, Simon and Ronan Ó Domhnaill competed in the 2025 Three Island Challenge, held recently in the north county Dublin town of Skerries.
The brothers scooped victory after battling a field of 19 boats and over 60 crew members. The trio were first across the finish line, taking home the Denis Guiney Perpetual Cup, first awarded in Skerries in 1959.
The seventh annual Three Island Challenge saw teams row traditional Irish currachs around Colt, St. Patrick’s and Shenick islands, landing on Shenick island to retrieve a flag before sprinting back to the South Strand.
Crews from across Ireland including Clare, Mayo, Donegal, Down and Dublin – as well from the USA, flying in from Albany, Boston, Annapolis and Leetsdale, took part.
