ST JOHNSTON duo Brett McGinty and Callum Toland along with Dungloe’s Matthew McCole carry the Donegal hopes into the semi-finals of the National Senior Cadet Championships which take place this weekend.
McGinty, Toland and McCole are all in semi-final action on Saturday.
McGinty is chasing a sixth Irish title and comes up against Portlaoise puncher Jimmy O’Reilly in the 70kgs semi-final. Boxing out of the Oakleaf ABC in Derry, McGinty impressively overcame fellow European bronze medalist Leon Gallagher (Finn Valley) last weekend.
McGinty tasted a bitter defeat to Christopher O’Reilly of Bracken in the Youth 1 final earlier this year and they have been kept apart, with the Dubliner facing Kevin Kehoe (Marble City) in the other semi-final.
Toland, McGinty’s cousin, also represents Oakleaf and has had a fine season. Beaten in a Schoolboy final earlier in the year, Toland fights Michael Avetisian (Mulhuddart) in the 57kgs semi-final after wins over Brandon Maguire (St David’s, Naas) and Patrick McGlinchey (Mourne GG) last weekend.
Dungloe ace McCole also has the bit between the teeth as he heads for a 54kgs semi against Andy McDonagh (St Paul’s, Waterford). Last weekend, McCole overcame Darren Barnwell (Avona) 3-0 in a preliminary round contest before upping the ante again on Saturday to claim an impressive 3-0 win over Kieran Maguire (Clann Naofa).
The finals will take place next weekend.
