DONEGAL boxers have been performing well at the Ulster Novice Intermediate Championships at the Dockers Club in Belfast this week.
A total of ten punchers from the county are set to line up in the semi-finals of their respective divisions on Thursday night, with Twin Towns trio Michael McMenamin, Barry Doherty and Kevin Maguire leading the charge.
Southpaw McMenamin recorded two wins by technical knockout this week, downing Darren McMahon (Carrickmacross) two rounds into Monday’s preliminary bout while Padraig Beagan (Keady) couldn’t finish round two of his clash with McMenamin on Tuesday night. A light-welterweight semi-final against Clonoe’s Eunan Morgan is his reward.
Cillin Boyle from Letterkenny ABC is in the other semi at light-welterweight against Oakleaf ABC’s Christy Doherty. Boyle stopped Johnny Redpath (Cairn Lodge) inside the opening round of Tuesday’s quarter-final.
Doherty is set to meet Dungloe’s David Tennyson in the semi-finals at light-middleweight, with Tennyson having beaten Charlie Stewart on Tuesday in the quarter-final. Tennyson was the unanimous winner.
Light-heavyweight Maguire has been drawn to face Ballyshannon’s Niall McGonigle in an all-Donegal semi-final. In the other semi at light-heavy, Sean Berryman of Buncrana will be up against Karl Haughey (Carrickmore) after an impressive win over Hillview puncher Thomas O’Boyle in Tuesday’s quarter-final.
Raphoe’s fighting barman Patrick Friel made it through to the semi-finals thanks to a thoroughly impressive win over Paul Sheridan. The Clonoe man had no answer in the middleweight quarter-final with Friel advancing to meet Eastside’s Aidan Thompson in the semis.
Dunfanaghy welterweight Colm McFadden scored a fine win over Twin Towns’ Cathal Gallagher in the quarter-finals. McFadden took the verdict of all three ringside judges and will be up against Carrickmore’s Colm Cummings in the semis, while Peter McGonigle from Ballyshannon will fight Finbarr Kelly (North Down) in a cruiserweight semi-final.
There was no luck for Davit Tsotsoria of Letterkenny who was beaten by Michael Duffy (Ligoneil) at super-heavyweight, while Conor McGlynn of the Twin Towns lost by TKO1 to Immaculata’s Tony Campbell at light-heavy.
