DONEGAL has plenty of interest in the semi-finals and finals of the Ulster 9 Counties Championships for 14, 15 and 16-year olds next weekend after a host of boxers came through their bouts at the weekend.

Convoy’s Bryan McNamee turned in an excellent display to reach the Boy 4 60kgs final as he defeated Carrigart’s Keelin Shields (Tko2) in yesterday’s semi-finals at the Halfway House Burnfoot and his club-mate Ruaidhri McElhinney overcame Dylan McAleer (St John’s) on a majority decision, but another Convoy man, Ronan O’Donnell, was beaten 3-0 by Banbridge’s Dominic Coyle.

Both men will be in action in next Sunday’s finals, as will Carrigart’s Martin Lynagh, who defeated Eoin Mulholland of East Down, Illies man John Moran, who was the victor against Eglinton’s Shane Murray, and Kyle O’Brien, St Bridget’s, who defeated Garreth Smyth from Clones. Bluestack’s Martin Ward, meanwhile, was stopped by Aaron McKenna (Old School, Monaghan) in their semi-final.

McNamee will take on Ricky Moore of All Saints, McElhinney will meet Dominic Coyle, Lynagh meets Aaron McKenna, Moran faces Liam Glennon (St Joseph’s) and O’Brien gloves off with Robert Brogan (Old School)

In the Boy 4 and Boy 5 quarter-finals, there were wins for Illies GG duo Kyle McDaid and Aaron Harkin, McDaid defeating Oran Ferry (St Joseph’s) 3-0 and Harkin defeating Carndonagh lad Dean Doherty (Tko 1). Issac McLaughlin (Twin Towns) and Jordan Furey (Letterkenny) lost out in their quarter-finals.

Donegal has many other boxers in semi-final action next weekend.

Adam Enfield of Letterkenny is up against Sean Corr (Dockers) in the Boy 4 44kgs division after he overcame Luke Roe on Saturday; St Johnston’s Callum Toland (who boxes for Oakleaf ABC in Derry) meets Dockers man Danny Lavery with Toland having stopped Jamie McDonagh on Saturday.

Also in the Boy 4s, Leon Gallagher faces Anthony Johnston at 66kgs and Illies lad Kyle McDaid goes against Aidan Kelly from All Saints at 50kgs.

2012 European Schoolboys bronze medal winner Brett McGinty, a native of St Johnston but wearning Oakleaf’s colours, takes on Conor McHugh from Strabane in the Boy 5 70kgs semi-final, while Kevin McMonagle of Dungloe takes on Peter Gavin (Gleann) at 46kgs, Conor McLaughlin of Buncrana is against Carl McKernan (Holy Family) at 52kgs, Matthew McCole of Dungloe squares up to Gleann’s Caoimhin Ferguson at 54kgs, Aaron Harkin from Illies clashes with Matthew Murnion (St Bronagh’s) and Convoy’s Corey O’Kane battles with J.P Ferry (Corpus Christi).

Bridgend man Ryan Greene has made the move to Illies, having previously boxed at Oakleaf, and in a Boy 6 57kgs semi, he meets Shaun McNamee from Springhill while club-mate Joseph Reddin faces St John’s puncher Patrick Stokes.
