Donegal artist invited to Anfield to present tribute to Liverpool star

By Róise Collins

A DONEGAL artist says he is thrilled to be heading to Anfield tomorrow to present two handcrafted copper pieces to the current Premier League champions.

Gaoth Dobhair man Neil Ferry and his 17 year old daughter Aoife, both lifelong Liverpool fans, say the invitation is “a dream come true.”

Neil created two stunning copper artworks, one of which is a moving tribute to Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who tragically died in a car crash in Spain earlier this month.

Neil and his family visited Anfield on April 2, when Jota scored the winner, and ultimately his final goal for the club, against Everton in the Merseyside derby.

The following day, they visited the club’s museum, where Neil struck up a conversation with a staff member and showed them some of his copper work.

The beautiful tribute to the late Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva who both tragically passed away following a car crash in Spain.

That chance meeting led to a connection with Mark Platt, the club’s historian and curator, who offered to find a special place within Anfield to display Neil’s artwork once the season wrapped up.

However, after the unexpected passing of Jota and his brother, Neil felt moved to craft a new tribute in their honour. The piece features the iconic Shankly Gates, two eternal flames, and an engraving of the club’s anthem, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

When Neil shared the piece with Mark, he was deeply impressed and quickly arranged for a special presentation, which will take place tomorrow evening at Anfield.

Although Neil had hoped to meet a player during his visit, most of the squad has already left for warm-weather training.

Neil regularly hosts copper craft workshops across the county. For more information, follow his Facebook page at Donegal Copper Craft.
