Doherty raises flood and coastal erosion issues during Minister’s visit

Sinn Féin TD for Donegal, Deputy Pearse Doherty, has said that communities across the county must now see urgent action on flood and coastal erosion prevention following a productive visit by Minister Kevin “Boxer” Moran, who has responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW).
Speaking today, Teachta Doherty said: “Years of underinvestment and delays to flood prevention schemes have left communities across Donegal exposed to coastal erosion and flooding.

“Yesterday, I invited the Minister to Donegal to hear directly from local residents about some of the very real issues affecting their communities. He has acknowledged that these issues must be prioritised so that homes and businesses are not left living in fear every time it rains.

“I raised many of the issues affecting Donegal with the Minister during his visit, and we were able to visit a number of locations where flooding and coastal erosion are problematic.

“I very much welcome Minister Moran visiting Donegal and the commitments he gave to work with local communities to try and progress these projects.

“We were in Pettigo Main Street, where businesses and residents have experienced repeated flooding and where a clear solution has been identified but delayed for far too long.

“We also visited St Naul’s Monastic Site in Inver, where ongoing coastal erosion is threatening an important heritage site, as well as Gaoth Dobhair GAA and the wider Doirí Beaga area, which regularly flood and disrupt community life.

“We also saw first-hand the ongoing issues at the Ards sea wall, where coastal erosion has created a gap in the wall.

“Communities across Donegal have waited long enough for these works to be delivered. They need action, they need certainty and they need investment.

“I will continue to press the government to ensure these works are carried out as soon as possible and that Donegal gets the investment it deserves.”
