AARON Doherty said ‘relief’ was the overriding emotion after he helped his county to the Ulster SFC title on Sunday.
The sides were level at twenty points apiece after nearly 100 minutes of action.
It went down to spot-kicks and Donegal came good.
“It’s nearly just relief.
“It’s hard to put it into words.
“We were down and out a couple of times. We were four down in normal time and we went two down in extra-time but we always fought back.
“It’s just relief to get over the line.”
Doherty stepped up twice to hit penalties such was the quality of efforts on both sides, but he held his nerve on both occasions.
“Once it goes to the fourth and fifth penalty you’re thinking ‘Jesus this is going to come back to me.
“You just have to get mentally ready for it and it came back to me but I put it away thank God.”
Doherty drove his shot to the left-hand side on both occasions and struck with authority.
“I do practise them to be fair and I hit them for the club.
“That’s my most comfortable side where I get most power so I backed myself to go there twice.”
