Dog owners urged to be vigilant amid lambing season

DOG owners are being reminded of the harm their pets can cause in lambing season if let roam free or unsecured.

Gardaí are urging dog owners to be vigilant, given this time of year which sees issues with sheep kills when dogs attack livestock.

The warning comes after two flocks of sheep in separate fields were attacked by dogs last week.

“Sheep worrying isn’t just chasing – it’s the stress, injury, or even death of sheep caused by loose or out-of-control dogs. A single attack can devastate a flock, causing ewes to miscarry and leaving lambs orphaned.

“Keep in mind that it is within the law for a farmer to shoot a dog that is worrying or attacking their sheep so please keep your family pet under effectual control.”

The spokesperson added that with dog ownership comes responsibility.

“Secure your dog, have it microchipped and registered with your vet.”

People are urged to report any sightings of out-of-control dogs to their local garda station or dog warden.
