Doctor challenged on care provided for suicide victim

Coroner-John-Canon

A TEN-person jury will give their verdict into the death of Derrybeg mother of three, Margaret Morahan (45), on Tuesday morning, having heard the evidence at a coroner’s inquest in Letterkenny on Tuesday.

Husband of the deceased John Morahan detailed the days before his wife took her own life by hanging and how he found her and tried to revive her on January 9, 2013.

Mr Morahan said his wife had been very worried she would loose her job, for alleged misconduct, since March 2012 and she felt they might lose their house.
The widower told the inquest how he went straight to the surgery of Dr Anthony Delap and waited for an hour to get to talk to him, as he was with patients. He then asked him to section his wife.

Mr Damian Tansey, representing the Morahan family, questioned Dr Delap about medication Mrs Morahan had been taking and about the emergency number Mr Morahan had tried to ring.

Dr Delap said she attended twice in 2012 – the last time Dr Delap saw her was on November 12, 2012 when she got a prescription for medication for fibromyalgia.
Mr Tansey questioned the medication Mrs Morahan had been prescribed and its potential negative effects.
Coroner Mr John Canon adjourned the inquest until Tuesday morning.
