Diver backs Donegal to defeat Galway

BY MATTHEW WILSON

FORMER county star Damian Diver feels that Donegal will have too much for Galway when the pair meet this Sunday in Division 1 of the National Football League.

Donegal will meet Pádraic Joyce’s outfit at Fr Tierney Park in Ballyshannon this Sunday where they’ll look to maintain their one hundred percent record.

Jim McGuinness’s side have registered four great wins to date courtesy of positive results over Dublin, Kerry, Mayo and Armagh, leaving themselves top of the Division 1 table.

Sunday’s opponents, Galway, are sitting sixth in the league ladder and are coming into this weekend’s encounter on the back of a disappointing defeat to fellow Connacht outfit Roscommon.

The current Connacht champions are in need of results but Diver feels that with Donegal’s forward momentum and the Ballyshannon factor considered, McGuinness’s men should have too much for them.

“Galway are funny in a way
where on paper they probably should be doing a lot better but they probably just haven’t gotten things right yet.

“Whereas McGuinness has started off at full throttle and has gotten things up and running, the train keeps going that way then and you get the confidence up. Maybe it’s the opposite for Galway.

“Ballyshannon is a tough spot to come to anyway to play Donegal, we rarely ever lose in Ballyshannon. I think Donegal should probably be too much for Galway.”

A victory this Sunday will leave the Ulster and Dr McKenna Cup holders on ten points and in a very strong position to contest the Division 1 National League Final which will take place at the end of
March.

Donegal have only lifted the Division 1 title once before, back in 2007, and with a four week gap between the end of the league campaign and the Ulster clash against Down, they may feel like they’re in the position to go for glory this term.

Speaking to the Donegal News, the Ardara native feels that it would be great for the team to aim for the league title and try and seal a piece of silverware in the lead up to their defence of the Anglo Celt Cup.

“It looks like that and there’s nothing better than winning. None of those players would have a Division 1 League title so it would be nice to go for that and concentrate on the Championship then.

“The way it is, it’s not like they’ll not be fit enough come Championship.

“There’ll be no big buttons being pressed, it’ll just be tactics and that sort of stuff so there’s no reason why we can’t go for the league.”
