Rachael Darragh had a strong start but was pegged back and suffered defeat in her first ever Olympics match.
The Raphoe native qualified for the Badminton Women’s Singles and was put in a tough group of three with number four seed Carolina Marin and Switzerland’s Jenjira Stadelmann.
Darragh had a superb start against Stadelmann as she won 21-13 and while she had a match point at 22-21 she was defeated 22-24 in the second set.
And in the final set, the Swiss woman took the third and final set 21-15.
Darragh will take on Spain’s Marin in the final game tomorrow (Wednesday) at 1pm.
Marin beat Stadelmann 2-0 in the group opener and will be the heavy favourite for the last group game.
