THE difficulty of this year’s Leaving Certificate higher-level maths paper one was highlighted at this week’s meeting of Donegal ETB.
Martin Gormley, Director of Schools at Donegal ETB, said the state exams had gone well and most pupils and staff members seemed happy. However, maths paper one, which was sat by students on Friday, June 9, had been an issue for some, he said.
“We had a bit of a wobble with maths paper one,” Mr Gormley said, adding that with the exam taking place on the Friday of the first week of the exams, it had set students back a bit going into that weekend. Board member Cllr Barry Sweeny agreed that the timing of presenting such a difficult paper before the weekend was not good.
“It caused stress, concern and put pressure on the students. It was a bad call in my eyes,” he said.
“Hopefully for the students, this will make them all the more stronger and I’d like to congratulate them on getting through what must have been a very stressful weekend.”
The reaction to the maths exam has been so strong nationally that the State Examinations Commission has said it will consider all commentary and correspondence from students, parents and teachers as part of the marking process.
