THE heartbroken family of a 66-year-old Letterkenny man who took his own life have hit out at the help he was offered by the HSE.

Speaking at the funeral mass on Wednesday of Mr Paddy McElroy from Lismonaghan, his step-son Fr Kevin Mulhern, said the family felt they had to ‘speak out to what is offered to those suffering from depression by the government and health services’.

“Why should Paddy after spending all evening sitting in a casualty department have to be sent home, having been told he’s fine- just keep and eye on him, while giving his daughter and son-in-law a lecture on health cuts?,” Fr Mulhern said.

“Surely, this should not happen in the Ireland of today, but it does and did happen. If I went to the casualty tonight with a broken arm I would be seen right and offered the care I need. Why is this not available in the same way to those who are severely suffering from depression and in need of help. Where is the sympathy of God in this,” Fr Mulhern told mourners.

Hundreds of mourners joined with the family for the funeral in St Eunan’s Cathedral on Wednesday morning.
