Diarmaid Doherty has been appointed News Editor of the Derry People and Donegal News.
With almost thirty years’ experience in local media, Diarmaid took up his new role this week and will be based in our Letterkenny office.
A native of Letterkenny, he began his career as a news and sports journalist with the Donegal Democrat in 1993. Over the years, he has held various senior roles and is a very well known and respected local journalist.
A son of May and the late Barney Doherty, Diarmaid is married to Deborah and they have four children, Aoife, Louise, Matthew and Ronan.
Speaking about his appointment Diarmaid said he is excited to be joining the team.
“It’s a wonderful new opportunity for me. The Donegal News has always been part of people’s lives in Donegal and is a trusted and reliable source of news,” he said.
“I’m excited to now be part of that team and look forward to helping deliver the stories and features that matter to our community.
“There have been so many changes in the way our local news and sports coverage is now delivered and the Donegal News has embraced those changes while continuing to deliver quality newspapers on a Monday and a Thursday.
“I always remember as a young boy, when I worked in Clarke’s Newsagents in Letterkenny, we kept the shop open late every Thursday night. The customers would wait in their cars outside the shop waiting for the newspaper van to deliver that week’s edition of the Derry People.
“Back then the paper was part of people’s lives in the town. And it still is all these years later.
“Hopefully I can play a part in maintaining that success story and help to provide our readers with the stories, features and articles that matter to them.”
Editor of the Donegal News, Laura McMonagle said Diarmaid brings a wealth of knowlegde and experience to the role.
“I want to congratulate Diarmaid on his appointment and I have every confidence he will be instrumental in helping to steer the title forward and maintain it as the best in the county.”
