THE Donegal News is delighted to announce the appointment of Diarmaid Doherty as its new Editor.

Diarmaid said he is extremely proud to have been appointed Editor.

“The Derry People and Donegal News has been a part of people’s lives for generations,” he said.

“It has a proud tradition of delivering quality news and features which our readers trust and enjoy.”

Diarmaid began working in local journalism as a reporter with the Donegal Democrat in June 1993. Over the years he has held different roles, both in news and in sport.

He said he is very excited to be appointed Editor at the Donegal News and to lead up a talented team at the paper.

“When I think of some of the brilliant editors and former staff members who have worked on this paper over the years, I am extremely humbled to be given this opportunity,” he added.

“As a Letterkenny man, I am well aware of the part that the Donegal News has played in our community.

“I remember a time when local shops stayed open late on a Thursday night in order to accommodate the delivery of that week’s edition.

Customers would even sit in their cars outside shops to wait for the delivery van to arrive.

“All these years later, there are many readers whose Thursday is not complete without getting a copy of the paper.

“Of course we now have a second paper in the week on a Monday along with a busy website and online editions which help us keep pace with the different demands of our readers.

“But while times have changed and people can now get their news from so many different platforms, the team at the Donegal News still take great pride in delivering quality local news, features and sports coverage.

“We know what our readers want from their local paper and it’s our job to continue to give attention to the issues that matter within our local communities.”

A son of May and the late Barney Doherty, Diarmaid is married to Deborah and they have four children, Aoife, Louise, Matthew and Ronan.

The Donegal News is part of North West News Group (NWNG) which also publishes newspaper titles in Tyrone and Fermanagh.

Congratulating Diarmaid on his appointment, Nigel McDonagh, NWNG managing editor, said, “As our new Editor, Diarmaid will play a pivotal role in shaping the direction of the Donegal News, ensuring that we continue to deliver engaging, informative, and impactful content to our readers both in print and online.

“With his proven track record in local journalism, Diarmaid is well-equipped to lead our Donegal News team with passion and professionalism. His commitment to journalistic integrity and dedication to quality will drive us forward as we strive to meet the evolving needs of our audience.

“We are confident that under Diarmaid’s leadership, the Donegal News will reach new heights of success in the ever-changing media landscape.”
