A Donegal businesswoman’s appeal for help in decluttering her brother’s room has sparked an unexpected surge in online orders.
Megan Wright drew thousands of likes, shares and retweets when she posted her tongue-in-cheek plea on social media.
But as well as a huge response, the Donegal Town woman’s company Design Wright is enjoying a boom in custom.
The 27-year-old took to Twitter and Instagram to ask members of the public to help her as her brother is due home from the USA shortly.
“I need you all to buy your Christmas presents from my website purely because my brother is coming back to Ireland for five weeks and I turned his room into a stockroom. I need to empty it and my mum is fuming at all the clutter so please, I need to sell it all.”
The off-the-cuff post captured attention across the world with one Twitter user saying “This is perhaps the best business pitch I have ever seen”. Another added simply “And that’s how you make a sale”.
Megan told the Donegal News she never thought for one second her appeal would get the traction it has.
“It wasn’t meant to be a marketing post, it was just a one-off comment. But I got up the next day and I had a load of new orders,” she said.
Design Wright was a lockdown project Megan set up after returning from Japan where she had been working as a teacher.
The homegrown company designs and sells everything from prints to stickers to earrings to baby clothes. But keeping up with demand means keeping a certain amount of stock.
“I work from home but I get a lot of printing done here in Donegal Town and I have a couple of local businesses that I work with,” said Megan.
“I have to buy in bulk so I have ended up with a lot of stock and it’s all in the spare room.”
Conor is due home shortly, having spent two years in the United States.
“He is coming home for five weeks but the thing is, my younger sister took his room and all his stuff has been moved into the box room.”
So not only is Conor coming home to a stock room, he is coming home to a different, much smaller room.
“There will be space, I promise. But the problem is there is more stock arriving all the time,” laughed Megan.
