THE Derrybeg NCT test centre has the lowest pass rate in the country this year, according to new figures released this week.
The Derrybeg centre had a pass rate of 38.81 per cent compared to the Deansgrange test centre in Dublin which had a pass rate of 62 per cent, the highest in the state.
The Letterkenny test centre had the sixth lowest pass rate at 45.6 per cent. Overall NCT centres in Dublin, Limerick and Laois have the highest pass rates.
Behind Derrybeg, test centres in Clifden (42.24 per cent), Cavan (42.37 per cent), and Castlerea (44.9 per cent) had the lowest pass rates.
Road test editor with completecar.ie, Dave Humphreys said poorer road conditions could be a factor.
“Down the country roads can be in poorer conditions, cars will typically do a lot more milage,” said Mr Humphreys.
“And they’re more susceptible to having defects that will result in an NCT fail.
“So things like tracking being out, uneven wear on the suspension: a lot of these can be the result of the roads that they’re travelling on.”
There has been a total of 19,064 tests carried out at the Letterkenny test centre in the year to date, according to the NCT website. Of those that failed in Letterkenny, 6,393 vehicles had ‘major fails’ while 737 were ‘dangerous fails’.
In Donegal Town there has been 13,617 tests carried out with 4,193 recording a ‘major fail’ and 637 with a ‘dangerous fail’.
There has been 5,722 tests carried out in the Derrybeg test centre so far this year with 1,997 major fails and 394 vehicles failed dangerously.
