DONEGAL’S Ulster Minor League game against Derry, scheduled for this Saturday at Celtic Park, has been called off after Derry notified officials that they were unable to fulfill the fixture.

With Derry conceding the game Donegal have been awarded two points for the game, meaning that Declan Bonner’s side are in pole position ahead of Saturday-week’s final group game away to Antrim.

Derry have around a dozen to fifteen panelists involved with St Pat’s of Maghera who are in preparation for next weekend’s Hogan Cup final against

Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne. The Oak Leafs had struggled in the League and now this weekend’s fixture with Donegal has been called off and awarded to the Tir Chonaill outfit.

“It is disappointing that the game has been called off, but we’ll get some training organised and will keep the hard work going,” Bonner said after learning of Derry’s concession.

“We’re looking to continue our momentum and we have good momentum built up. The target for us ahead of this week was to top the group and that is still the case.”

The break will now enable some of Bonner’s walking wounded to get back to fitness. Lorcan Connor (shoulder) had been ruled out of the Derry game while Jamie Brennan (hand) and Christian Bonner (tonsillitis) were rated as extremely doubtful for the fixture.

Conor Doherty had been suffering with a medial ligament strain, but having come through training this week the Kilcar forward is fit again. His club-mate Stephen McBrearty remains sidelined, though is said to be making good progress in his recovery from a cruciate injury.
