Derek Ryan talks “Long Shot Love” and what’s coming next for the country star

By Tara McCormack

Irish country music sensation Derek Ryan has just unveiled his 14th studio album, ‘Long Shot Love’, a remarkable blend of poignant tributes, electrifying collaborations, and infectious anthems.

Known for his ability to craft songs that touch both the heart and the dance floor, Derek continues to solidify his place as one of Ireland’s most cherished country artists.

The Carlow-born star, now based in Enniskillen, has made waves, once again, with this 12-track album, seamlessly weaving together personal stories with vibrant collaborations.

One of the standout moments of ‘Long Shot Love’ is Derek’s partnership with the legendary Kilfenora Céilí Band on the lively track, ‘In Between The Jigs & The Reels’.

Derek shared how the idea for the collaboration was born, recalling a performance that left a lasting impact on him as a young musician.
“How that came about was that I saw them years ago on the gig rig at the Fleadh in Clonmel in August 1992,” he told Country Beat.

“We were also playing on the gig rig that day as a little Grúpa Ceoil, and I remember that they just blew me away. They were incredible to watch.”

Inspired by their energy and addition of drums, Derek’s own drumming and Céilí journey began, and now, years later, he’s come full circle.

Not only did Derek fulfil a childhood memory working with the Kilfenora Céilí Band, but he also got to tick off a personal goal: “The day of the shoot, they even let me do a bit of Céilí drumming which was like a little box tick to drum with them.”

Alongside this collaboration, Derek also teamed up with rising star, Olivia Douglas, on the track, ‘The Only Lie I Ever Loved’.

The pair filmed a stunning music video at Crolly Distillery, set against the breath-taking backdrop of Donegal’s Wild Atlantic Way.

“Olivia’s been a special guest for my concerts for years, and I’ve got to know her really well,” he detailed.

“She’s from a trad background as well, and a great singer. And we just said that one day we’ll do a duet.”

The song itself, according to Derek, is ‘easy-going and a bit more melodic’.
