Fianna Fáil TD for Donegal North East Charlie McConalogue has expressed his sadness at the passing of former Taoiseach and Fianna Fáil Leader Albert Reynolds.
Deputy McConalogue said, “I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Albert Reynolds this morning and wish to join with my party colleagues in extending my greatest sympathies to his wife Kathleen, his 7 children and his extended family and friends.
“Leaders from across the political divide, nationally and internationally, have been paying tribute to the man credited with transforming Anglo-Irish relations and bringing about an enduring peace process. Donegal, which suffered greatly during the Troubles because of its proximity to Northern Ireland, has reaped the rewards of Albert Reynolds’ hard work, determination and persistence in bringing peace to Northern Ireland. His legacy is that this county and country is a more secure, tolerant, integrated state.
“His business expertise was central to his role in a number of Ministries, and his ingrained innovation and resolve saw him secure investment and jobs, revolutionise the telecommunications system and develop the National Grid. His legacy can be seen in all aspects of modern life in Ireland.
“I have opened a book of condolences for Albert Reynolds at my constituency office in Carndonagh. People can sign the book between 9am-5pm or can contact my office and leave a message to be included in it. All of the messages will be passed on to the Reynolds family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a ainm dhílis”.
