Dentist dons protective wear in bid to remain open

A Letterkenny dentist is continuing to accept emergency clients from behind personal protective equipment and mask.

Dr Damian Flanagan of 03 Dental said he wanted to remain open as long as possible in the interest of his patients. But the practice will be adhering to strict guidelines including physical distancing and the wearing of heavy duty protective clothing.

Dr Flanagan said, “Covid-19 has put the population on edge and it is highly contagious. Therefore social distancing is paramount and complacency should be abandoned. A lot of people are going to contract this virus through unknown contact.

“As 03 Dental is committed to patient care and welfare, the practice is remaining open for emergencies, albeit with advisory guidelines. We have procured a supply of personal protective equipment to enable the safe delivery of emergency dental treatment. This includes FFP3 face masks, manufactured by 3M, a trusted US health manufacturer, which are protective against viruses.”

Dr Flanagan said the categories of dental emergencies include pain that cannot be managed by over the counter pain tablets, trauma, swelling, uncontrolled bleeding and serious infection.

“To limit the potential spread of Covid-19, it is important that a patient contacts the practice by telephone initially so that we can take you through a series of screening questions,” the dentist said.

“Based upon this assessment, a patient may be accepted for emergency dental treatment as soon as possible or asked to contact their GP prior to 03 Dental accepting the patient.

“We need to limit the number of people in the clinic at any one time, so we would encourage a patient to attend alone whenever possible.”
