Delight in Killea as new play park opens

THE border village of Killea has received a massive boost with the completion of a brand new community park.
After five years in the making, the new park on the Main Road across from Border Stores will open with a massive family fun day on September 11.
The park consists of a children’s play area with great facilities including swings, slides, and climbing frames, along with a football pitch, basketball pitch, and a family picnic area.
The park has facilities for children aged from one to 16 years old, and is set to become a popular facility within the community.
The park committee have been working on the project for around five years, and the works were significantly delayed due to Covid.
However, committee member Nicola Mallon is delighted to finally get the gates open.
“It is so exciting for the whole village,” said Nicola.
“This was supposed to be completed last year but because of Covid-19, it was delayed but thankfully the contractors were fantastic and got the work done quickly for us.
“It looks great and there is something for all age groups.
“We have been campaigning for this for years because Killea had absolutely nothing for children or young people.
“We finally got it over the line with the help of councillor Paul Canning and we are so happy to have it ready.
“We want it to be family focused and we hope that it will be used by the whole community for years to come,” said Nicola.
To open the park, the committee have planned a massive ‘party in the park’ from 12 to 4pm on Saturday September 11.
Nicola continued, “We have a big day planned to mark the opening of the park.
“We have David James singing, the local football club are going to do a bit of coaching with the children and a local DJ will be playing too.
“All the local businesses have been fantastic and have made donations and contributions to the day.
“We are so appreciative of all the donations we have received and everyone has been amazing.
“We want to give the kids a really fun day and mark the opening of the new park,” said Nicola.
If you would like to donate anything or volunteer at the fun day, contact Nicola on 07711200135 or any of the committee members, Julie Hannigan, Katherine Mc Bride, Laura Keogh or Kerry Friel.
